Can I Replace The Data Plate On A Asme Tank

Every new pressure vessel includes a nameplate.

The nameplate is one of the about important parts of your pressure vessel. Without information technology, the operation of your vessel may be in direct violation of federal, state, and/or local laws or regulations.

Let's have a closer look at the pressure vessel nameplate and why it's and then important. (Annotation: The numbers on our list correspond to the numbers in the pic below.)

The ten parts of your pressure level vessel's nameplate

  1. ASME Code Marker
  2. National Board Code
  3. Pressure level Vessel Construction Identifier
  4. Radiography Examination Identifiers
  5. Mail service Weld Heat Treatment Identifier
  6. Pressure level Vessel Maximum Allowable Working Pressure level
  7. Pressure Vessel Maximum Allowable External Pressure
  8. Force per unit area Vessel Minimum Design Temperature
  9. Years Manufactured
  10. Manufacturer's Series Number

1. ASME Code Mark

All pressure vessels we build are manufactured in accordance with the ASME Code.

According to this standard, the vessel must be built with a nameplate. Once the pressure vessel passes its final inspection, the ASME Code mark is stamped onto the nameplate, proving the vessel was built in accordance with this standard.

2. National Board Code

This location on your pressure level vessel nameplate is reserved for the display of its National Lath number. If the pressure vessel manufacturer chooses to register the vessel's manufacturer'due south data written report with the National Board, a unique number is assigned to the pressure vessel and is displayed here.

This is a slap-up benefit to you, as the pressure vessel owner. The certificate, along with the nameplate, is proof to all federal, land, and local regulators that your pressure vessel meets the requirements of the ASME Code.

Without the data report and the nameplate, nigh inspectors will not allow the operation of the pressure vessel inside their jurisdiction. If yous e'er lose this document, yous can contact the National Board, and, for a small fee, receive a copy of the manufacturer's information report.

You'll need the following information off of the nameplate when placing an order for this study:

  • The proper noun of the pressure level vessel's manufacturer, listed behind the wording "certified by:" on the nameplate. Example to a higher place, Figure i.
  • The National Lath number – detail number 2 on the nameplate example above.
  • The year the pressure level vessel was manufactured – item nine on the nameplate example above.
  • The manufacturer series number – item 10 on the nameplate instance.

Note that registering the pressure vessel with the National Board is non a requirement. We experience this is an invaluable benefit for all of our clients, and then we register all of the pressure vessels we manufacture.

3. Pressure Vessel Structure Identifier

This area of the pressure vessel nameplate is reserved for the identifier of the blazon of construction that was used to manufacture your pressure level vessel. Beneath is a list of the different identifiers that may exist used.

If your pressure level vessel is manufactured for special service utilize, as divers within the ASME Lawmaking, then an identifier is besides displayed in this surface area of the nameplate. This identifier follows the identifiers listed higher up, preceded by a hyphen. The identifiers for the different special services are shown below.

For example, if your pressure level vessel was manufactured with welded construction and for lethal service, the identifier would be displayed every bit "W-Fifty".

4. Radiography Examination Identifiers

During the manufacturing phase of your pressure vessel, it may have had an test of its welds with radiography testing. If then, one of the post-obit identifiers will be displayed in this area of the nameplate.

5. Post Weld Heat Handling Identifier

Your pressure vessel may have been post-weld oestrus-treated during its manufacturing stage of construction.

If so, one of the post-obit identifiers will exist displayed in this area of the pressure vessel nameplate.

vi. Pressure level Vessel Maximum Allowable Working Pressure

In this area of the nameplate you'll notice the pressure vessel's maximum allowable working pressure and the maximum temperature.

Notation that if you programme to use the pressure vessel at this pressure to a higher place the maximum temperature displayed here, it could atomic number 82 to a catastrophic failure of the vessel.

It's also important to know that this pressure is not the pressure y'all will piece of work the pressure vessel at during normal operations. (Come across the terms "Design Pressure" and "Maximum Allowable Working Force per unit area" in ourYou Need to Know These 21 Pressure Vessel Manufacturing Terms weblog mail service.)

7. Pressure Vessel Maximum Allowable External Pressure

Here's where you'll discover the pressure vessel's maximum allowable external force per unit area (vacuum) and the maximum temperature.

Note that if you plan to utilize the pressure vessel at this pressure above the temperature displayed here, yous could experience a catastrophic failure of your pressure level vessel.

viii. Pressure Vessel Minimum Design Temperature

The minimum temperature that the pressure vessel was designed to operate at is displayed here. Operating the pressure vessel below this temperature could as well pb to a disastrous situation.

If you intend to utilize the pressure vessel outside of the figures listed in areas 6, vii, or 8 as defined in this mail service, information technology is highly recommended you consult with an engineer that has feel with the ASME Code.

If non, what might happen? You got it – failure. And not only of the equipment, just it could too create a potentially fatal scenario for your employees or anyone in the immediate vicinity.

ix. Year Manufactured

This is the year your pressure vessel was manufactured. This piece of information is particularly important if you lot are purchasing a used pressure vessel for apply in your facility.

The ASME Lawmaking requirements have changed in many ways in the by 20 years. Buying a used force per unit area vessel that was built more than 20 years ago may not meet today's regulations in your state or local jurisdiction.

Always research what those requirements are prior to buying a used pressure vessel. Doing so volition salve you money and the headaches of disposing of a multiple ton paperweight because it doesn't run into today's regulations.

x. Manufacturer Series Number

Every pressure vessel a manufacturer builds post-obit the ASME Code must be provided with a unique serial number. This is where that series number is displayed.

Additional Nameplate Information

The item numbers i through 10 shown in figure 1 are required by the ASME Code to be displayed on a pressure vessel nameplate.

Even so, additional information can exist provided as a convenience for you lot. Some examples of these are:

Where do I discover my pressure level vessel nameplate?

Now that you lot sympathize what the information means on the nameplate, where is the nameplate located at? Unfortunately, the ASME Code does not specifically specify the location for a pressure vessel's nameplate.

Here are a couple of places to look:

  • If your pressure vessel was manufactured past Tank Fab or is less than 20 years old, look for the nameplatevirtually the pressure level vessel door'southward locking ring. Information technology's usually either attached to a structural piece of steel that is welded to the pressure vessel's beat, attached directly to the beat, or the force per unit area vessel door'southward locking band. Nosotros normally attach ours to a T-bar that is welded to the pressure level vessel's shell somewhere near its transmission safety swing handle.
  • If your pressure vessel is more than 20 years quondam, the nameplate data may not be on a concrete plate but could existstamped into the pressure vessel'southward trounce or door's locking ring directly. Manufacturers usually postage this information either into the force per unit area vessel'south vanquish, only behind the door's locking band, or in the locking band itself.
  • Your force per unit area vessel'due south back up members. Sometimes the manufacturer volition place this information on one of the supports the pressure vessel is manufactured with. This is especially true if the pressure level vessel is a vertically oriented pressure vessel.

Get familiar with your pressure vessel nameplate

Now that you have a ameliorate understanding of all the different elements of your pressure vessel'due south nameplate, you lot should be able to see why it is ane of the most important parts of your pressure vessel'southward assembly.

You lot need to be confident that your force per unit area vessel meets federal, country, and local regulations so that nothing causes your product to boring down.
